By On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the critical role played by China, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in helping Pakistan secure an IMF loan program. The IMF board is scheduled to meet on September 25 to approve the loan, and Sharif expressed his hope that this would be the final IMF program for Pakistan. He highlighted the need for substantial efforts from the nation, particularly the youth, to achieve economic self-reliance and reduce dependence on external loans. Sharif emphasized the importance of expanding the tax base, curbing tax evasion, and fostering self-sufficiency to ensure a dignified and sustainable future for the country.
The Prime Minister praised the government’s economic team, the army chief, and all those involved in securing the loan. He noted that positive economic indicators, such as a reduction in policy rates and inflation, along with rising remittances and agricultural exports, signaled that the economy was on the right path. Sharif also underscored the government’s efforts to promote IT exports and enhance the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with a new policy being developed based on recent statistics.
In addition to economic issues, Sharif addressed public health concerns during a separate meeting where he reviewed measures to prevent the spread of monkeypox (mpox) in Pakistan. He directed authorities to enforce strict scanning at airports, seaports, and land entry points to detect potential cases. Currently, Pakistan has reported five cases of mpox, all of which were diagnosed in individuals arriving from abroad. The detected strain is considered less dangerous, but Sharif stressed the importance of vigilance and preparedness.
Sharif also participated in a virtual global event with 48 world leaders to discuss the upcoming UN Summit of the Future in New York. He emphasized the significance of the summit as a crucial opportunity for international cooperation to tackle global challenges, including the rising debt burdens faced by developing nations. The summit, scheduled to begin on September 22 at the UN Headquarters, aims to address pressing issues and promote effective solutions through collective global action.
