By Voters in the US will head to the polls on November 5 to choose their next president. Initially set as a rematch of the 2020 election, the race was dramatically altered in July when President Joe Biden ended his campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

Before Biden’s withdrawal, polls consistently showed him trailing Trump. Though hypothetical then, several polls suggested Harris might not perform significantly better. However, since she began her campaign, Harris has gained a slight edge over Trump, maintaining a small lead in national polls.
As of now, Harris averages around 47%, a number she solidified after her convention speech on August 22, while Trump remains steady at approximately 44%. The endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy, who ended his independent candidacy on August 23, did not significantly boost Trump’s numbers.
Despite these national averages providing a snapshot of each candidate’s popularity, the US electoral system means that winning the most votes nationwide doesn’t guarantee victory. The electoral college system places greater importance on winning key battleground states, where both candidates have a real chance of securing electoral votes. These crucial states will ultimately decide the outcome of the election.
