WhatsApp to let you share original uncompressed media soon

WhatsApp, the widely-used messaging app, is loved by many across the globe. However, it’s not without its quirks, one of them being the way it compresses photos and videos when you share them. This can really downgrade the quality of your media, even if you have a top-notch smartphone camera.

Good news, though: Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, is working on a solution. They’re developing a feature that will allow you to share images and videos on WhatsApp in their original, uncompressed glory.

You might wonder why this matters. Well, even though WhatsApp isn’t primarily a platform for sharing media like Instagram, the compression it applies to images and videos can make your high-resolution smartphone photos and 4K videos look pretty blurry on the receiving end, especially on larger screens.

Now, there’s evidence that this feature is in the works. WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp updates, has shared a sneak peek. In a screenshot from the beta version of the Android app, we see a new option to “Choose from gallery” under the Attach icon. This hints at the possibility of sending images and videos without any compression.

However, there’s a catch. When you use this feature, your files will be sent as documents rather than regular images or videos. This isn’t entirely new; you could already send media as documents, but the difference here is that you’ll be able to do it directly from WhatsApp’s interface, making it much more convenient.

It’s worth noting that this feature is still in development and isn’t available to beta testers yet, so we don’t have a release date. But it’s promising to see that Meta is listening to user feedback and working on improving WhatsApp. In the meantime, if you want to share media without compression, you can send files as documents, and WhatsApp now supports files as large as 2GB.

In the end, while we don’t know when exactly this feature will arrive, it’s a step in the right direction for those who want to share their photos and videos on WhatsApp in all their high-quality glory.
