Netflix Initiates Testing of Video Games on TV, PC, and Mac

Netflix is trying something new by offering video games to some users in Canada and the United Kingdom. They’re starting with two games that can be played on certain TV models, Windows PCs, macOS computers, and mobile devices. However, popular gaming consoles like Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are not included in this test.

The person in charge of Netflix’s gaming, Mike Verdu, mentioned that this is just the beginning of their gaming efforts. They’re giving a chance to a few users to try out two games in a test phase. One of the games is Oxenfree, a spooky story-driven adventure that Netflix acquired in 2021. The other is Molehew’s Mining Adventure, a game where you dig for gems.

According to Verdu, this limited test is mainly to check how well their technology works for streaming games and using controllers. They want to make sure it’s a good experience for users. The way it works is that the games are actually running on a distant computer and then streamed to your device. All you need is a good internet connection to play.

At the start of this test, there will be two games available: Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure. People who want to play these games on a TV will need to get a special Netflix Game Controller. If you’re playing on a computer using a web browser, you can use a keyboard and mouse.

Netflix is using this test to figure out how well their game streaming technology and controller app work before they make it available to more people. Initially, you can play these games on certain TVs like Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. They plan to add more devices later on, so if your TV isn’t on the list, don’t worry, they’re working on it.
