Microsoft Launches New Web App Store for Windows

Microsoft has introduced an innovative web version of its app store for Windows, aimed at revolutionizing the way users discover and access Windows applications online.

This new web-based platform supersedes the traditional method of browsing for Windows apps, seamlessly redirecting users to the Microsoft Store client on both Windows 10 and the recently launched Windows 11 operating systems.

The tech giant has gone the extra mile by discarding the older React codebase from the previous web version of the Microsoft Store. In its place, a modern web version has been established, employing state-of-the-art technologies such as Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a robust C# ASPNET backend.

Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel shed light on this transition, emphasizing that the previous site was founded on an outdated React codebase coupled with an obsolete UI framework.

The revamped user experience is curated to provide users with a thoughtfully designed interface, enabling easier exploration of new apps through a contemporary web tech stack. Gabriel expressed hope that users would find the new setup highly beneficial.

Enhanced Discoverability and User Experience

The redesigned web store boasts an improved search functionality, making it a breeze for users to find Windows apps or Xbox PC games. These discoveries can be effortlessly downloaded through the primary Microsoft Store application on Windows.

It’s important to note that this web version is not intended to replace the main Microsoft Store app; rather, it complements it. Gabriel elucidated this, urging users to envision it as a web interface seamlessly integrated with the app store on Windows, working harmoniously together.

This strategic enhancement holds significant potential for Microsoft as the company endeavours to broaden its app and gaming reach beyond the Windows ecosystem.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer had previously disclosed Microsoft’s strategic move to develop an Xbox mobile gaming store, aligning with the anticipation of regulatory changes compelling companies like Apple and Google to open up their mobile app stores.

Paving the Way for the Future

Microsoft’s Xbox mobile gaming store is anticipated to make its debut as early as 2024, a development spurred by the EU’s Digital Markets Act. To ensure optimal discoverability across search results and social media networks, a web interface is deemed imperative.

Microsoft is embracing these transformations, propelling itself into an era of increased accessibility and seamless app discovery for users across platforms.
