Meta Threads Testing Hashtags Alongside Trending Topics

Meta, the tech giant helmed by Mark Zuckerberg, is pushing the boundaries of social media once again with the testing of a unique tagging feature for its platform, Threads.

Departing from the conventional hashtag model, this innovative feature transforms tagged words into vibrant blue-text hyperlinks, adding a dynamic element to user conversations.

The initial phase of testing is set to be an exclusive affair for Australian users, constituting a “limited test” before Meta considers a wider release.

Users will notice a seamless experience as they input a “#” into the post text, revealing a card with relevant topics and similar options. Each topic on the card is accompanied by a post count, a feature reminiscent of Instagram’s interface.

One notable limitation of Threads’ tagging feature is its restriction to a single topic per post. While this may limit attempts at spamming for wider reach, it aligns with Threads’ visually appealing, clutter-free design.

Meta reassures users that this is just the beginning, with ongoing refinements planned for subsequent versions.

This announcement follows a week of significant updates for Threads. Meta introduced options enabling users to keep Threads posts exclusive to the platform, detached from their Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Users can now delete Threads accounts independently, offering more autonomy. Pinned posts have also been made available to all users, enhancing content visibility.

Meanwhile, Instagram’s chief, Adam Mosseri, continues to keep the community intrigued with the evolving dynamics of direct messages on Threads.
