Meta Introduces Avatars on Video Calls on WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Meta, is in the process of testing an exciting new feature as part of its beta version for Android, labelled as update 2.23.19.14. This update brings forth the introduction of the ‘Video Avatar Calling’ feature.

WhatsApp has transformed into more than just a messaging tool, offering various ways to connect with friends, such as text, emojis, video messages, GIFs, stickers, and more. Its voice and video calling capabilities have also seen improvements over time, including expanded group support and call links for broader usage. Now, WhatsApp is taking video calls to the next level by incorporating avatar support, which promises to add fun and interactivity to your video conversations.

With the Video Avatar Calling feature, your video calls can become more engaging as your avatar will replicate your facial expressions and movements. It’s important to note that using avatars won’t compromise the end-to-end encryption on video calls, ensuring your safety and privacy remain intact. However, it’s worth mentioning that Meta may collect some data to enhance the avatar experience.

The announcement banner emphasizes that all video calls will continue to be end-to-end encrypted, even when avatars are active. Additionally, users have the flexibility to switch back to a regular video call at any time. The banner provides two options: ‘Switch to Avatar’ and ‘Not Now.’

Previously, you could use your avatar during video calls on Instagram and Messenger, as these three messaging services share many common features. Zoom also offers the option to use an animated avatar during video calls.

Currently, WhatsApp allows up to 32 people in a group video call, though you can only start the call with 15 people simultaneously.

The development of avatars for video calls on WhatsApp was initially observed in June 2022. This feature is currently available to some users who are using the latest beta version of the Android app. If you have set up your avatar, try making a video call to check if the option to use it appears. Meta has been actively adding new features to WhatsApp in recent months, and it’s possible that avatar support for video calls could become available to all users in the coming months.
