Road Repairs to Begin After Rain Spell, Says Mayor

City Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced that road repair and construction will commence immediately after the rain subsides. He acknowledged that rain-induced road damage is common and has directed the Engineering Department to begin repair work without delay.

In addition to addressing road repairs, Mayor Wahab emphasized the need to modernize KMC parks to enhance facilities and recreational opportunities for citizens. He made these statements during a meeting at the KMC head office on Sunday, attended by Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi, Engineering Department Director General Azhar Ali Shah, Parks Director General Junaid Ullah Khan, Financial Advisor Nayab Saeed, and Chief Engineers from all districts.

During the meeting, Mayor Wahab reviewed the progress of the Engineering and Parks Departments and set a deadline for completing all development projects by December 31. He stressed the importance of accelerating incomplete projects under the Annual Development Program to meet this timeline.

The mayor also instructed the Parks Director General to allocate space for urban forestry within parks, aiming to increase tree cover and improve Karachi’s climate. He highlighted the role of trees in maintaining a moderate climate and urged that large-scale tree planting be prioritized.

Mayor Wahab reiterated the need for hard work and dedication to meet these goals, noting that citizens expect municipal institutions to improve Karachi. He commended KMC, the water corporation, and other municipal bodies for their successful rainwater drainage efforts, which have yielded better results compared to previous years.

He pointed out that maintaining internal roads and streets falls under the responsibility of town administrations, who are also tasked with water drainage. The mayor called on town chairmen to expedite the removal of standing water from internal roads and streets.

Following the rains, Mayor Wahab visited various city areas to assess the situation, reporting that all stormwater drains were clear and unobstructed. He instructed that potholes caused by rainwater be filled immediately, with a focus on making roads motorable in the first phase.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining Karachi’s infrastructure, Mayor Wahab assured that all necessary steps would be taken to achieve this, regardless of authority or funding constraints. He noted that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had also visited various areas and drains in Karachi the previous day to evaluate the situation.

The mayor urged all officers and staff to work diligently to improve road conditions and provide immediate relief to citizens. During his review, he issued on-the-spot instructions to address issues promptly.
