Pakistan Met Department Warns of Heavy Rain in Karachi Due to Cyclonic Storm

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts heavy rain in the city. Wahab warned that the region will experience intensified rainfall and strong winds, urging particularly bike riders to stay indoors.

According to Geo News, the low-pressure area from the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is advancing towards Karachi. Wahab’s warning on X noted that the city has been experiencing rain for the past three days, with heavier rainfall and stronger winds expected soon. Residents are advised to stay safe and contact emergency services at 1339 if needed.

The PMD has reported that the deep depression over the Rann of Kutch, India, has moved west-southwest and is now located approximately 250 km east-southeast of Karachi. The system is predicted to continue westward, entering the northeast Arabian Sea by tomorrow morning and intensifying into a cyclonic storm due to favorable conditions.

The PMD’s advisory predicts heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Karachi and several other districts in Sindh until August 31. Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected in Karachi, Tharparker, Badin, Thatta, and other areas.

Fishermen are warned to stay away from the sea due to rough conditions, with Sindh fishermen advised to avoid venturing out until August 31 and those in Balochistan until September 1. The PMD also cautions that sea conditions will be rough to very rough, with squally winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h.
