The divisional administration has declared the closure of all commercial markets in the provincial capital and its neighbouring districts every Wednesday, starting from October 18 for the next two months.
This decision also encompasses the shutdown of schools and various public and private organizations, encouraging a work-from-home policy, pending approval from the Punjab government. The final verdict regarding the weekly school holiday and other smog-related measures will be determined in an upcoming meeting of the caretaker provincial cabinet.
The proposal for market closures stems from an understanding that the Air Quality Index (AQI) worsens during peak business days. Traders were approached, and a compromise was reached: shops would close on Wednesdays and remain open on Sundays. This approach aims to make a significant impact on AQI levels and subsequently combat the hazardous smog.
A recent meeting of the anti-smog cabinet committee was instrumental in generating a range of proposals and recommendations focused on smog reduction. The Lahore Metropolitan Corporation headquarters hosted this meeting, where experts and relevant departments collaborated, emphasizing the necessity of urgent action.
Conclusive decisions are pending as experts meticulously review these proposals and recommendations, considering their potential to combat smog effectively. A tree-plantation drive has also been initiated to control smog and improve the environmental landscape.
In addition to market closures, the administration has imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, restricting the burning of stubble in agricultural fields across the Lahore division. Furthermore, strict regulations regarding smoke-emitting vehicles have been introduced, ensuring their prohibition within the city’s boundaries. Violations of these regulations will face severe consequences.
The Lahore division’s chief stressed the importance of rigorous enforcement, aiming to create a cleaner and healthier atmosphere for all residents. Additionally, initiatives by various agencies have been set in motion to ensure cleanliness and water sprinkling in public and private sector projects across Lahore and surrounding districts.
