Imran Khan Moves Supreme Court for Bail in Cipher Case

Former Prime Minister and PTI Chief Imran Khan has taken a significant legal step by approaching the Supreme Court for post-arrest bail in the ongoing cipher case.

Mr. Khan, represented by his counsel Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, contested the dismissal of his bail plea by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The appeal argued that the IHC bench, in dismissing the bail petition, suggested that since the challan had been submitted to the trial court, Mr. Khan could seek acquittal there.

The appeal highlighted that Mr. Khan had already challenged the judge’s appointment, the court’s status, and the FIA’s proceedings related to the cipher probe.

It further stated that the high court overlooked the “immunity” under Article 248, asserting the former PM’s constitutional right to keep the public informed on crucial matters.

The plea requested the court to overturn the IHC’s decision and grant bail to Mr. Khan.

In a related development, the IHC bench, led by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, extended the stay order against the ongoing cipher trial.

During arguments, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan informed the bench that the accountability judge, invoking Section 352 of the CrPC and Lahore High Court Rules, sought a jail trial for Mr. Khan due to security concerns.

Justice Aurangzeb emphasized the need for caution, noting that the charges against Mr. Khan carried life imprisonment implications.

The attorney general disclosed that the IHC single-member bench while dismissing PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s petition, affirmed an open trial and directed jail authorities to allow maximum public attendance.
