ECP: General elections will be held in the last week of January 2024

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially confirmed that the general elections in the country are scheduled to occur in the last week of January 2024.

This announcement came after an extensive review of the progress in the delimitation process, which aligns with the recent census data.

To facilitate transparency and public engagement, a preliminary list of constituency delimitations will be made public on September 27.

The ECP has emphasized the importance of considering objections and suggestions from the public regarding the delimitations, aiming for a fair representation of constituencies. The final list of constituencies will be released on November 30.

Following the release of the final constituency list, the electoral schedule, spanning 54 days, will commence, culminating in the general elections in late January 2024.

This statement by the ECP provides clarity and resolves uncertainties about the election timeline, especially after the government’s recent approval of a new census.

Previously, the dissolution of national and provincial assemblies in August prompted the need for elections within a 90-day stipulated time period, indicating a deadline of November 6. However, the constitutional necessity to redraw boundaries prior to the elections led to the decision to hold them within the last week of January 2024.

Various major political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), have urged the Election Commission to conduct the polls promptly to alleviate prevailing uncertainty within the nation.
