DG ISPR Suggests Possibility of Military Trial for Imran Khan

The chief military spokesperson of Pakistan hinted at the possibility of former Prime Minister Imran Khan facing a trial under the Army Act in connection with the case involving former ISI chief Lt. Gen. (retd) Faiz Hameed. During a press conference on Thursday in Rawalpindi, DG ISPR Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that while the matter is sub judice, military law mandates action if individuals use the Army Act for personal goals.

Since Gen. Faiz’s arrest, Khan has feared being implicated and sought a court order to prevent a potential military trial. The DG ISPR’s comments suggested that Khan could be involved in the ongoing court martial against Gen. Faiz, who faces allegations of corruption, misuse of authority, and collusion with political entities.

Gen. Faiz was previously close to Khan, which created tension between Khan’s government and the GHQ. Khan had advocated for Faiz’s continuation as DG ISI, but Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa insisted on Faiz’s transfer, a decision that Khan attributed to former PM Nawaz Sharif. Faiz was rumored to be involved in a conspiracy against the current military leadership and is linked to the violent May 9 protests.

The DG ISPR emphasized that the Pakistan Army is apolitical and operates strictly according to the Constitution and laws, stressing that the military will take action against anyone violating the Army Act, regardless of rank or status. He underscored the army’s commitment to self-accountability and its ongoing role in Pakistan’s fight against terrorism, which has seen significant progress over the past two decades.

The DG ISPR also addressed the situation in Balochistan, condemning terrorist attacks and emphasizing that external forces are exploiting local grievances to disrupt development. He assured that Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan remain strong despite challenges, and the army continues to conduct over 100 intelligence-based operations daily to ensure security and support economic development.
