WhatsApp Initiates Testing of Custom AI-Generated Stickers in Beta

WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), is trying out a new feature that involves AI-generated stickers. Some users in the Android WhatsApp beta program have noticed this new addition. The stickers are created using an AI system and can be generated based on a text description.

When using this feature, users can find a “Create” button in the sticker tab’s keyboard. You simply type a description of the sticker you want, and the AI will provide you with a selection of stickers to choose from. These stickers are designed to be easily recognizable, and if someone receives one of these AI-made stickers, they might be informed that it was created by an AI. If you come across any stickers that you find inappropriate or harmful, you can report them to Meta.

A spokesperson from Meta mentioned, “We are currently working on various generative AI-powered experiences and testing some of them in a limited way. We don’t have more details to share at the moment.”

It’s not surprising to see WhatsApp trying out AI-generated stickers, given that we’ve been witnessing the integration of generative AI in various mainstream apps this year. This feature could add a personalized touch to WhatsApp conversations, letting users have unique stickers without needing to rely on commonly used ones like GIFs and memes. Similar features are also reportedly in the works for Instagram and Messenger.

In summary, WhatsApp, under Meta’s ownership, is experimenting with AI-generated stickers that users can create by describing what they want. This could make conversations more individualized and decrease reliance on frequently used stickers, GIFs, and memes. The feature aligns with the trend of AI integration in mainstream apps this year and might also appear on Instagram and Messenger.
