President Joe Biden Urges Passing the Torch to Younger Leaders

In a historic Oval Office address on Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race to help unify the country. “I revere this office, but I love my country more,” the 81-year-old president said, emphasizing the need to pass the torch to “younger voices.” He urged the nation to embrace democracy and reject hatred, stating, “The defense of democracy, which is at stake, is more important than any title. I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation.”

In his first televised address since this surprising decision, Biden praised his Vice President, Kamala Harris, who is set to become the new Democratic presidential nominee. “She’s experienced. She’s tough. She’s capable,” Biden said, marking his fourth and likely final address from the Resolute Desk.

Biden’s decision comes after intense pressure from Democrats following a poor debate performance against Donald Trump, raising concerns about his age. Speaking softly due to a recent COVID-19 infection, Biden highlighted his achievements while acknowledging it was time to step aside. “There is a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices — yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now.”

Biden’s family, including his wife Jill, daughter Ashley, son Hunter, and several grandchildren, were present in the Oval Office during his speech. Jill Biden later expressed gratitude on social media to supporters and emphasized the importance of trusting Kamala Harris.

Biden’s exit has disrupted Trump’s campaign, which had focused on Biden’s age and mental fitness. Trump, now the oldest candidate in US history at 78, criticized Biden’s speech, calling it “barely understandable, and so bad!” Republicans have demanded Biden’s immediate resignation, arguing that if he is unfit for re-election, he is unfit to serve as president. However, Biden affirmed his commitment to his presidential duties, focusing on the economy and foreign policy for the remainder of his term, including pursuing a peace deal in the Middle East.

Biden, who has criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza, is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Thursday. Notably, Harris will also meet with Netanyahu, and Netanyahu is set to meet Trump in Florida on Friday.

The US election campaign is rapidly advancing without Biden. Trump, in his first rally since Harris secured enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee, attacked Harris as a “radical left lunatic.” He accused her of concealing Biden’s “mental unfitness,” while the White House denied any cover-up regarding Biden’s health.

On the campaign trail, Harris addressed a Black college sorority in Indianapolis, stating, “I am fighting for our nation’s future.”
