IHC to Deliver Verdict on Imran’s Plea Against Toshakhana Sentence today

The Islamabad High Court has yet to make a decision regarding Imran Khan’s request to suspend his prison sentence in the Toshakhana case. This decision is expected to be announced today. The court proceedings have concluded, with Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri presiding over the case.

Meanwhile, Attock jail authorities have submitted a report to the Supreme Court outlining the facilities provided to the former Prime Minister. According to the report, Imran Khan’s diet includes desi chicken twice a week and mutton cooked in desi ghee once a week. He has been provided with a mattress, four pillows, a table, chair, prayer mat, air cooler, and a 21-inch LED TV, as well as access to newspapers.

However, the federal government has rejected the idea of holding meetings with Mr. Khan six days a week, as it could impact the rights of the 982 other prisoners. The Attorney General for Pakistan stated in the report that Mr. Khan is allowed to meet with his family, lawyers, and friends, with designated days and times specified under the Pakistan Prison Rights (PPR) 1978 rules.

The report from the jail superintendent dismisses claims of a camera being installed in Mr. Khan’s prison cell. Justice Farooq noted that administrative matters of the high court and Supreme Court are handled by their registrars and can be instructed to take action if needed.

Regarding the complaint made by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), it was argued that in the past 50 years, no complaints about corruption and corrupt practices have been submitted to any magistrate. Additionally, the lawyer contested the suspension of Mr. Khan’s three-year sentence, emphasizing that it is at the discretion of the court.

The report details that Mr. Khan is confined in a cell measuring 9×11 feet, which has been renovated with whitewashed walls, cemented flooring, and a ceiling fan. The washroom in the cell has been expanded, a new door installed, and various amenities added for comfort and hygiene. An official sanitary worker ensures the cleanliness of the cell and washroom, and the confinement area is regularly cleaned and maintained.
