Gas Tariffs Set to Rise in Compliance with IMF Requirements

After the recent approval of relief measures aimed at reducing electricity bills, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on the Pakistani government to consider a substantial increase of 45-50 per cent in gas prices.

The IMF’s request specifically targets a raise in gas tariffs, associated with ‘Fuel Adjustment Charges,’ effective from July 1. This request comes with a strong emphasis on cracking down on electricity and gas theft to improve revenue collection.

It’s important to note that any changes to gas tariffs must receive approval from the federal cabinet.

Prior to this, the IMF’s decision to provide relief of Rs15 billion, aimed at easing the financial burden on electricity consumers, is a testament to the commendable performance of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

This relief package highlights the relentless efforts of key figures in the caretaker government, including Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, Caretaker Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, and Caretaker Energy Minister Muhammad Ali.

The relief package is expected to bring significant benefits to consumers who use up to 200 units of electricity. For individuals falling within this category, the relief is expected to range from Rs 3 to Rs 4 per unit on their electricity bills.

Furthermore, measures will be put in place to accommodate delayed payments, ensuring that these consumers won’t face penalties for late payments. This development showcases the government’s commitment to providing financial relief to its citizens while addressing the IMF’s demands for economic reforms.
