Apple Inc said today it had invested more than $100 billion in its Japanese supply network over the last five years, as its Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook visited the epicentre of the country’s semiconductor industry.

Tim Cook claimed in a Monday tweet that he visited Kumamoto prefecture in southern Japan, which is home to several semiconductors and leading technology firms’ facilities, including one under development by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

Apple stated in a statement that it had increased its spending on Japanese suppliers by more than 30% since 2019, with a network spanning nearly 1,000 companies ranging from multinationals to family-run businesses.

It named Sony Group Corp as one of its largest suppliers in Japan for photo sensors for iPhone devices.

It also named medium- and small-sized businesses as partners, including textile firm Inoue Ribbon Industry Co and mould producer Shincron Co.

Apple said that 29 Japanese suppliers, including Sony, Murata Manufacturing Co, Keiwa Inc, Fujikura, and Sumitomo Electric Industries, had committed to renewable energy for Apple-related businesses by 2030.
