Female Everest Record-Setter Receives Heartfelt Welcome in Kathmandu

A remarkable feat was achieved when a Nepali woman, Phunjo Jhangmu Lama from Gorkha, reached the peak of Mount Everest in less than 15 hours, making her the fastest female climber to do so.

This accomplishment, confirmed by base camp officials, occurred at 6:23 am, marking her second time claiming this title.

Phunjo commenced her ascent from the base camp at 3:52 pm on Wednesday and successfully reached the summit at 6:23 am on Thursday, as per Khim Lal Gautam, chief at the Expedition Monitoring Field Office at the base camp.

Traditionally, men from Nepal, especially from the Sherpa community, have dominated mountain climbing while women have tended to their homes. However, Phunjo’s achievement reflects changing times, with more Nepali women venturing into climbing and setting records.

Phunjo herself, a mother, hopes her climb will inspire other women and promote opportunities in trekking and climbing for them. Despite the dangers associated with climbing Everest, Phunjo’s motivation stemmed from showcasing the skills of Nepal’s talented mountain guides, who play a crucial role in facilitating climbers from around the world.

Phunjo emphasizes that her pursuit is not merely about breaking records but also about highlighting Nepal’s prowess in mountaineering and the proficiency of its guides.

Phunjo’s dedication to climbing and guiding is evident from her previous record set in 2018 and her recent accomplishment in reclaiming her title as the fastest female climber. She sees mountaineering not just as a profession but as a passion intertwined with her life.

Tragically, amidst the celebrations, casualties on the mountain have also been reported. Five individuals have lost their lives, while three are still missing, including renowned climbers and their Sherpa guides.

Her journey began in Chhokangpaaro village of Tsum valley in Gorkha, where she developed her love for mountains. Over the years, she has conquered several peaks and supported rural communities in their livelihoods.

Her climb coincided with festivities celebrating Buddha’s birthday, imbuing her achievement with a sense of peace and spirituality. Growing up in the mountains, Phunjo’s connection to her roots and her passion for climbing have shaped her remarkable journey.

Despite the risks, hundreds of climbers attempt Everest each spring, with Nepal issuing permits and earning royalties from mountaineering. This year, China also reopened its Tibetan route to foreigners, further diversifying the options for climbers.

Phunjo Jhangmu Lama’s extraordinary achievement not only breaks records but also symbolizes the resilience, skill, and spirit of Nepali climbers, particularly women, in the world of mountaineering.
