This update applies universally to all public accounts, granting Instagram users the ability to download and share Reels, unless account owners modify their download settings. For users under 18 with public accounts, the download feature is initially inactive, but they can activate it at their discretion.
In the official FAQ, Instagram outlines rules to protect the privacy and accessibility of Reels. Account privacy settings play a pivotal role in determining who can access Reels downloads.
For public accounts, any Instagram user can download Reels, with customizable settings for specific posts or the entire account. However, for users under 18 with public accounts, the download feature is initially disabled, giving them the option to enable it later.
Conversely, Reel downloads for private accounts are restricted, limiting access to the content unless the account owner switches their privacy setting to public.
Meanwhile, Instagram provides public account holders with the ability to manage their download settings, giving them control over whether their followers can download their Reels. The process involves recording and editing a reel, tapping on “More options,” selecting “Advanced Settings,” and toggling the switch to allow downloads.
Instagram emphasizes that, in the case of public accounts, only newly created reels can be downloaded unless modifications are made to the download settings. The downloaded reels include an Instagram watermark, the original poster’s username, and audio attribution.
Additionally, the original audio from a reel can be included in a downloaded reel only if the reel containing that specific audio is downloadable.
