By Chinese and Russian military leaders jointly criticized the United States during a significant security forum held in Beijing.
This display of discontent comes amid concerns over the lack of consistent communication between the U.S. and Chinese armed forces, particularly as tensions escalate in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.
The Xiangshan Forum, a renowned platform for military diplomacy in China, kicked off without the presence of a Chinese defense minister, traditionally the host. However, it did host a delegation from the United States, adding significance to the event.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu issued a grave warning to the Western nations, highlighting the potential dire consequences of their involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
Shoigu emphasized that the escalating conflict with Russia could lead to a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers, carrying catastrophic consequences. He also praised the Russia-China relationship, considering it a model of cooperation.
Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, delivered veiled criticism of the United States and its allies, accusing “some countries” of attempting to undermine China’s government.
Yet, he also expressed a desire to enhance military ties with the United States, emphasizing mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation.
Notably, the traditional keynote speaker at the forum, China’s defense minister, was absent this year. Li Shangfu, the former defense minister, was dismissed without an explanation, and no replacement has been named.
The lack of high-level military communication between China and the U.S. remains a critical issue. It has persisted since the U.S. sanctioned Li’s appointment as defense minister in March.
Despite the tensions, the U.S. delegation, led by Cynthia Xanthi Carras, China country director in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense, engaged with Chinese officials.
Chad Spragia, a former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, emphasized the importance of U.S. participation, stating that it’s vital for the U.S. to actively engage in such discussions.
As international relations continue to evolve, these diplomatic encounters hold the potential to shape the global landscape.
