President Grants 90-Day Remission for Prisoners in Honor of Eid Miladun Nabi

President Dr Arif Alvi made an important decision on Wednesday in observance of the 12th Rabiul Awwal. He granted a reduction in the sentences of certain prisoners, allowing them to serve 90 days less in jail.

This decision, in accordance with Article 45 of Pakistan’s Constitution, does not apply to inmates convicted of serious crimes such as murder, espionage, or activities against the state. It also excludes cases related to robbery, theft, adultery, kidnapping, terrorism, financial crimes, and offences causing losses to the national treasury. Additionally, foreigners convicted under the Foreigners Act 1946 and those imprisoned under the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act 2022 are not eligible for this sentence reduction.

The remission is specifically extended to male inmates aged 65 and above, female convicts aged 60 and above, and minors under the age of 18 who have completed at least one-third of their sentences. However, these individuals must not have committed crimes falling into the categories mentioned earlier.

Notably, President Alvi had previously granted a 180-day remission to prisoners on August 14, 2023, in honour of Pakistan’s 76th Independence Day.

Article 45 of the Constitution empowers the President of Pakistan to grant pardons, reprieves, and respite, as well as to remit, suspend, or commute sentences issued by any court, tribunal, or other authority.

The month of Rabiul Awwal began on September 18, with the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) falling on September 28 this year. While citizens across the country are gearing up to celebrate Eid Miladun Nabi in traditional fashion, the festivities are overshadowed by the challenges of rising inflation and increased living costs.
