Pakistan Senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar named caretaker PM

Pakistani Senator Anwar-ul-haq Kakar has been appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister to supervise the upcoming national elections, according to an announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday. This decision came after a meeting between the outgoing Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and the leader of the opposition, Raja Riaz.

Raja Riaz Ahmad, following his discussion with outgoing Premier Shehbaz Sharif, stated, ‘We initially agreed that the next prime minister should be chosen from a smaller province to ensure the concerns of these regions are duly addressed.’

The dissolution of Pakistan’s parliament occurred on Wednesday. As per the legal requirement, elections are to be held within 90 days. However, the recent release of the updated census results suggests that additional time will likely be necessary to redefine constituencies.

The timing of these elections will probably exclude former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was found guilty of corruption last weekend and sentenced to three years in prison.

Taking the reins of the interim government is a significant responsibility, given Pakistan’s ongoing political instability since Khan’s removal via a no-confidence vote in April of the previous year. Furthermore, the nation is grappling with intertwined challenges in both economic and security domains.
