Instagram Introduces Feature to Limit Unwanted Messages from Strangers to One Per User

In a bid to enhance user experience and ensure safer interactions, Instagram has introduced a new feature that limits the frequency and content of messages from strangers.

Now, users will only receive a single text from unknown individuals, and further conversations will be possible only after the user accepts their chat request or adds them to their list of followers.

This update addresses the issue of bothersome and spam-filled direct message (DM) notifications that many users have encountered. Instagram’s initiative aims to create a more controlled environment by preventing strangers from sending multiple messages.

The platform recognizes the potential for misuse, especially concerning inappropriate content, and acknowledges the specific benefit this feature holds for women who often face unwarranted advances in their DMs.

The latest DM feature complements Instagram’s existing protective measures, designed to counteract abuse and unsolicited contact. The “Hidden Words” setting now automatically diverts DM requests containing offensive language, phrases, or emojis to a secluded folder, shielding users from harmful content.

Additionally, the “Limits” feature safeguards against abrupt surges in undesirable comments or DM requests, fostering a more positive experience.

Instagram’s “Restrict” setting provides an alternative to outright blocking, allowing users to discreetly manage interactions with potential harassers. When a user is restricted, their comments are only visible to them, keeping unwanted attention at bay.

Moreover, any DMs sent by restricted users are routed to a dedicated DM requests folder.

For users who opt not to follow certain accounts, the new feature confines incoming messages to just one text. Extended conversations are permitted only upon accepting chat requests or establishing a follower relationship.

This measure is particularly significant for larger accounts that frequently receive messages from unfamiliar sources, helping to minimize spam.

With this update, DM requests will be restricted to text-based messages exclusively. Sharing images, videos, or voice messages will become possible after a chat request is approved or when the user becomes a follower.

This adjustment ensures that unsolicited visual content will no longer appear in message requests. Instagram has chosen to address the potential abuse associated with unlimited message requests, allowing for a more controlled and pleasant messaging experience for all users.
