PM at UNGA Calls for Urgent Action on Gaza, Kashmir, and Global Climate Justice

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered a compelling speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), addressing pressing global issues such as Israel’s military actions in Gaza, the unresolved Kashmir conflict, climate change, and the international community’s responsibilities regarding justice and human rights.

Starting with a Quranic recitation, Sharif expressed pride in representing Pakistan and congratulated newly elected UNGA President Dennis Francis. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the principles outlined in the UN Charter.

Call for Immediate Action on Gaza

In a passionate condemnation of Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza, Sharif described the situation as a “genocidal war” and a humanitarian catastrophe. He highlighted the suffering of Palestinian civilians, particularly women and children, calling for immediate action to end the violence.

“Our hearts bleed as we witness the tragedy unfolding in the Holy Land,” said Sharif. He advocated for a sustainable peace solution through the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Sharif urged the international community to act decisively to protect Palestinian lives and support their bid for full UN membership.

Kashmir Conflict and Indian Aggression

Sharif drew parallels between the Palestinian struggle and the Kashmir conflict, criticizing India for its ongoing repression in Jammu and Kashmir. He accused India of ignoring UN Security Council resolutions that call for a referendum to allow Kashmiris to determine their future.

“Like the people of Palestine, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have struggled for a century for their freedom and right to self-determination,” he stated. He condemned India’s actions since August 5, 2019, and emphasized that Pakistan would respond decisively to any aggression across the Line of Control (LoC).

Climate Change and Pakistan’s Vulnerabilities

Shifting focus, Sharif addressed the global climate crisis, highlighting the devastating floods that hit Pakistan in 2022, causing an estimated $30 billion in damages. He pointed out the inequities faced by countries like Pakistan, which contribute less than 1% of global carbon emissions yet bear the brunt of climate disasters.

“Pakistan emits less than 1% of global carbon, yet we have paid a heavy price for no fault of ours,” he remarked, calling for the “polluter pays” principle and urging developed nations to fulfill climate finance commitments.

Global Economic Reforms

Sharif also highlighted the growing debt crisis among developing nations, describing it as a “death trap.” He called for urgent reforms to the international financial system, which he labeled “morally bankrupt,” emphasizing the need for equitable trade and technology systems.

Pakistan’s Economic Stability and Fight Against Terrorism

Discussing Pakistan’s economic recovery, Sharif noted his government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, and strengthen foreign reserves. He emphasized the need to combat terrorism, vowing to eliminate threats posed by groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Regional Cooperation and Connectivity

Sharif praised the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), particularly its focus on infrastructure and renewable energy. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace in Afghanistan and the need for humanitarian assistance.

Combating Islamophobia and Promoting Global Unity

Sharif raised concerns about the rising tide of Islamophobia, condemning attacks on mosques and Quran desecrations. He emphasized the need for a united global front against this issue, particularly criticizing India’s treatment of its Muslim population.

A Call for Justice and Peace

Concluding his address, Sharif urged the international community to uphold justice and equity, asserting that marginalized voices must be heard.

“Our founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, declared that Pakistan stands by the United Nations Charter, and we remain committed to peace and prosperity for the world,” he affirmed.

This address underscores Pakistan’s firm stance on crucial international issues, advocating for justice and human rights on the global stage.
