Atishi Becomes New Chief Minister of Delhi After Kejriwal Resigns

“Atishi will lead Delhi until the upcoming elections, carrying forward both CM Arvind Kejriwal’s vision and the future of the national capital,” AAP stated.

Atishi, 43, is a key figure in the decade-old AAP, which, despite its relative youth, has made significant strides in Indian politics. She has previously served in various roles in the city government, including finance and education.

Kejriwal, 56, announced his resignation on Monday, a day after being granted bail in a corruption case. He has denounced his arrest as a “political conspiracy” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In his resignation speech, Kejriwal challenged the public to judge his integrity, stating, “I will resign as Chief Minister in two days and ask people whether I am honest.” Known for his criticism of Modi, Kejriwal has been Delhi’s Chief Minister since 2015 and is a prominent member of the Congress-led INDIA alliance.

Following his bail by the Supreme Court on Friday, Kejriwal’s resignation has set the stage for Atishi’s brief tenure. Speaking to reporters, Atishi expressed her commitment to serving as Chief Minister until the state legislative assembly elections in February, to reinstate Kejriwal in the position. She praised Kejriwal as her “guru” and acknowledged the opportunities he provided her.

“Atishi, coming from an ordinary background, credited her rise to Kejriwal’s trust and support,” she said.
