Blinken Asserts 90% of Gaza Ceasefire Agreement Finalized

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that 90% of the terms for a cease-fire and hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas have been settled but emphasized the need to resolve the remaining critical issues. During a press conference in Haiti on Thursday, Blinken highlighted ongoing discussions on key points such as control over the Philadelphi Corridor and the details of a hostage exchange. He stressed the urgency of finalizing the agreement, noting that “every day without a finalized agreement risks derailing progress.”

Despite Blinken’s positive outlook, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has downplayed the prospects of an imminent deal. In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu called reports of an advanced agreement “false” and rejected any suggestions that a cease-fire or withdrawal from the Philadelphi Corridor was imminent. Netanyahu has consistently opposed withdrawing from this strategically significant area along Gaza’s border with Egypt.

Hamas continues to demand a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, including the Philadelphi Corridor, as well as the return of displaced Palestinians. The ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 40,800 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, according to Gaza health authorities. Israel is currently holding approximately 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, while Hamas is believed to be holding around 100 Israeli hostages.

Blinken remains hopeful for a resolution but underscores the need for timely progress to avoid further delays or setbacks in the fragile negotiation process.
